Research Involving Protected Subjects and Classes
If your thesis, dissertation, formal report or creative component involves the use of human or animal subjects or biohazards or other sensitive agents ,
your research project is governed by federal regulations which require review by the OSU Institutional
Review Board (IRB). Approval to conduct the research must be obtained from the IRB before the research is started. IRB information is available here.
The Process
When you have finalized your research plans, you should complete the IRB application and submit it as
directed to the IRB office. After you have satisfied the conditions required for
approval, the IRB office will send you a letter stating that you are authorized to begin the research project.
Each research project is governed by a protocol number, and the approval is for a maximum of one calendar year.
If your research extends beyond one year, you must submit a request for continuation. If any aspect of your
approved research protocol changes, you must obtain approval for the change from the IRB by submitting a
modification form. The IRB approval form (and modification form, if needed) must be placed in an appendix
to the student's dissertation, thesis, or formal report.
Failure to obtain IRB approval will result in the university's rejection of the thesis, dissertation,
or formal report and may result in disciplinary action. While the Graduate College does not monitor the process resulting in a creative component,
it does not negate the student's responsibility to obtain IRB approval if human subjects are involved in that
creative activity.
This section is meant to be informational only, and does not contain a complete description of the IRB
review process. All of the forms and guidance for completing the application are available on the IRB web site.
More information on IRB guidelines and procedures can be found at the IRB's website. A complete set of IRB guidelines and the IRB application are available to download as well. |
