Restriction on Immediate Publication of Theses/Dissertations |
| |
|
| |
A written request from the Research Advisor, and approved by the college Dean or Associate Dean for Research, must be submitted to the Dean of the Graduate College when the nature of your thesis/dissertation research would either require, or cause it to be in the interests of, the University to withhold immediate publication of the document. Examples include:
- work carried out under a research agreement which restricts all or portions of the work from public access for a period of time;
- the appearance of potentially patentable material in the document, to allow a request for a provisional patent to be processed prior to public release of the thesis/dissertation;
- an agreement to publish the material elsewhere which requires delay of the thesis/dissertation publication until the publication of the other work.
An intended publication release date, and appropriate supporting information (such as a copy of any pertinent contractual agreement) must accompany any such requests. Absent contractual obligations for a lengthier period of restriction, the publication release date should normally be no longer than one year after the thesis/dissertation submission date.
If the request to withhold publication is approved, the document will be released for public distribution at the stated release date. Requests for extension of the publication withholding period may be made to the Dean of the Graduate College at an appropriate time prior to the initially-set release date; such requests should include documentation supporting the request for an extension of the withholding period.
