City Year National Service Scholars

OSU welcomes City Year AmeriCorps members completing their year of service or senior corps members, alumni and staff to apply to become OSU Graduate College City Year National Service Scholars.

 

What is City Year University Partnership and how do City Year AmeriCorps members become OSU Graduate College City Year National Service Scholars?
City Year, an education-focused nonprofit organization operating in more than 20 US cities, enlists volunteers to give a year or more of service to their communities through the City Year “give a year, change the world” programs.  City Year corps member make measurable impacts in the lives of the students in the communities they serve and grow as an individuals in the process. During their 11 months of in school service, City Year AmeriCorps members develop leadership and professional skills that help them advance their careers after City Year—whether they choose to go into nonprofit, law, medicine, or something entirely different.

Oklahoma State University is proud to partner with City Year through our shared visions and values of integrating the power of knowledge and service in addressing social problems. The partnership will allow idealistic and committed City Year leaders with a high level of maturity, insight and experience from working in diverse settings to be supported while they seek graduate degrees at OSU. The OSU Graduate College City Year National Service Scholars Program offers an encouraging environment for City Year AmeriCorps members, alumni and staff to pursue their graduate educational goals in a community of their colleagues from other City Year programs throughout the United States.

OSU Graduate College City Year National Service Scholars Program is competitive
City Year AmeriCorps members, alumni and staff who apply for admission to OSU graduate programs receive an application fee waiver; however, acceptance as an OSU Graduate College City Year National Service Scholar is competitive and is not guaranteed. The following are program requirements:

  • Must be completing your year of service or be a senior AmeriCorps member, alumni or staff

    • Must provide a letter of program completion from your Director of City Year Alumni and Career Services

  • Only applies to residential graduate programs on Stillwater, Tulsa, or Center for Health Sciences campuses – no distance learning or outreach formats

  • Graduate certificate programs are not eligible for this or other tuition benefit programs.

  • Cannot be used to earn a second graduate degree

  • Cannot accept or have access to other tuition waiver programs, including faculty/staff programs

  • Must participate in OSU City Year National Service Scholars Program activities

  • OSU City Year National Service Scholars fellowship and subsequent tuition waiver is applicable to one OSU graduate degree

  • Renewal of the OSU City Year National Service Scholars fellowship is contingent upon satisfactory progress each term

Apply for a qualifying OSU graduate program using our online application system. You will be able to use an OSU Graduate College City Year National Service Scholars application fee waiver. To receive an application fee waiver for City Year AmeriCorps members completing their year of service or senior corps members, alumni and staff, obtain a letter of program completion from the  Director of City Year Alumni and Career Services and upload this letter to the application before submitting it. Once you have uploaded your letter and clicked the “I am a City Year Americorps member (a City Year letter of completion must be uploaded with your application to qualify)” on the “Payment Page” you can submit your application without paying the application fee.

Graduate student benefits of this program, such as tuition waivers, are available only to individuals with a primary classification as graduate students.  For example, OSU employees taking graduate classes do not qualify for graduate student benefit programs, irrespective of whether their employment is a benefit eligible position.  In addition, one cannot opt-out of certain benefits in an a-la-carte manner to seek eligibility for other benefits.  Please contact Dr. Ken Clinkenbeard (gradi@okstate.edu) in the Graduate College for more information.

  • Approved OSU Graduate College City Year National Service Scholars are required to complete the OSU Graduate College City Year National Service Scholars Tuition Waiver Agreement to receive waiver benefits. The agreement explains the obligations and restrictions that apply to the tuition waiver benefits.
