Tuition Waiver Exception Request
To receive tuition waiver benefits, a graduate student must be enrolled full-time and employed in a 0.50 FTE assistantship for the full academic term (e.g., 17 weeks in fall).
In rare cases, students who don’t meet this employment duration may request an exception.
Qualifying Circumstances
The Graduate College will consider exception requests under the following circumstances:
-
Delay in Arrival
- Explain the nature of the delay, the student's arrival and enrollment date, and the start date of the qualifying assistantship.
- Note: Delays typically must not extend beyond the last day to enroll for the term/session.
-
New Funding Source
Provide the following:
- Project name
- Funding source name
- Principal Investigator (PI)
- Project start date
Note: If eligibility is approved, the waiver amount may be prorated unless the appointment continues into the next term.
Example: If the GRA begins on October 1 and extends through May 31, a full waiver applies for the fall. If it ends in December, a partial (e.g., 59%) waiver is applied.
-
Degree Completion
Applies to students who have received tuition waivers in the past two regular terms and are completing all degree requirements early in the current term.
Include:
- Current enrollment details
- Confirmation of enrollment in thesis or dissertation hours
-
Cross Department Assistanship
Applies when a student receives an assistantship offer from a department different from their academic program.
This may qualify for an exception, but it must be explained in collaboration with the graduate advisor.
Submitting a Request
The exception request must be submitted by the graduate student in consultation with the graduate advisor and/or program coordinator.
