Spoken English Proficiency for Employment
OSU policy requires all persons for whom English is a second language to demonstrate
an acceptable level of spoken English before being employed in an instructionally
related capacity, including laboratory teaching assignments. Graduate students who
serve only as laboratory assistants (e.g., setting up and/or maintaining equipment)
are not required to comply with these provisions. See ITA policy page for specific policy requirements for the International Teaching Assistant Exam. Any
new international teaching assistant (ITA) who was required to provide an English
proficiency test score for admission purposes is required to have a qualifying score
of 26 or greater on the speaking portion of the iBT, 8.5 on IELTS or to pass the ITA
Exam prior to being approved for instructional assignments. Students who submitted
PTE Academic scores must take the ITA exam. All new ITAs are also required to participate
in the international teaching assistant orientation. See the ITA Exam overview page for specific policy requirements.
