G-Rise Eligibility
Who is eligible for the G-RISE program?
- Students completing their first year in one of the 12 participating doctoral biomedical programs;
- Working with a G-RISE mentor; and
- US Citizen or permanent resident (Green Card holder).
Students from the groups below are especially encouraged to apply:
- Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis.
- Individuals with disabilities as described in the Americans with Disabilities Act .
- Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds (see below for some examples):

- Were or currently are homeless, as defined by the National Center for Homeless Education;
- Were or currently are in the foster care system as defined by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services;
- Were eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program for two or more years;
- Have/had no parents or legal guardians who completed a bachelor’s degree as defined by the U.S. Department of Education;
- Were or currently are eligible for Federal Pell grants;
- Received support from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) as a parent or child.
- Grew up in one of the following areas: a) a U.S. rural area, as designated by the Health Resources and Services Administration, or b) a Centers for Medicaid Services-designated Low-Income and Health Professional Shortage Areas; Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services-designated Low-Income and Health Professional Shortage Areas.
Doctoral students who are not eligible for the G-RISE program may still benefit by participating in the professional development activities.
