Award Overview

The Honorary Graduate Commencement Marshal recognition is the highest honor bestowed on doctoral and master’s degree graduates at Oklahoma State University during each commencement ceremony.

This recognition highlights graduates who demonstrate exceptional scholarly achievement, strong academic performance, and meaningful scholarly contributions within their discipline that reflect the values of OSU’s land-grant mission.

Selected marshals receive a monetary award and are recognized at the commencement ceremony, where they assist in leading the graduate procession and degree recognition. 

  • Eligibility

    Nominees must meet the following requirements:

    • Must be completing a master’s or doctoral degree in the Spring or Summer semester of the award year.
    • Must demonstrate scholarly achievement and academic excellence.
    • Scholarly contributions should reflect the values of OSU’s land-grant mission.
    • Nominees may not have previously served as a commencement marshal in an earlier ceremony.
    • Each graduate program may submit only one nomination.
    • Self-nominations are not accepted.
  • Award Recognition

    Selected Honorary Graduate Commencement Marshals receive:

    • $1,000 monetary award
    • Recognition during the OSU Commencement Ceremony
    • Listing in the official commencement program
    • A regalia stole
    • Opportunity to lead the graduate processional, recessional, and degree recognition
    • Preferred ceremony seating for guests
  • Nomination Process
    • Nominations must be submitted by the Department Head of the academic program.
    • Each program is limited to one nomination submission.
    • All nomination materials must be combined into one PDF file and submitted by email to: grad.dean@okstate.edu
  • Required Nomination Materials

    The nomination must be submitted as a single PDF file and include the following items:

    1. Graduate Coordinator's name and sponsoring graduate program
    2. Nominee’s full name, CWID, and degree name with options
    3. Nominee’s unofficial OSU transcript
    4. Nominee’s curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
    5. Completed Media Release Form (required for publication and promotional use)
    6. Brief nomination narrative (maximum 250 words) describing the nominee’s contributions to OSU’s land-grant mission
    7. Completed the PowerPoint awardee slide template provided by the Graduate College
  • Important Dates

    Nomination materials must be submitted by the deadline specified in the official call for nominations. Selected honorees are expected to participate in the Graduate College Awards Ceremony (spring marshals only) and the corresponding OSU Graduate College Commencement Ceremony for their award cycle.
